Navy Will Study Clean-Up Options

Congratulations to the RAB and others who spoke out! The Palo Alto Daily News reports that the Navy has reversed its decision and will study and report on options other than dismantling Hangar One.

From the July 29 article:

The U.S. Navy has reversed its position and will now study 12 options for cleaning up the contaminated historic Hangar 1 at Moffett Field …

The Navy "heard very loudly and very clearly at the RAB meeting what (the Navy was) presenting was not acceptable to the public," (Lead Remedial Project Manager Rick) Weissenborn said.

… "It's certainly very encouraging," said Bob Moss, a Palo Alto resident who sits on the Restoration Advisory Board … and now a member of Save Hangar One. "This is the sort of thing we've been asking them to do."

The Navy will publish the results of their study September 2. The really hard work for us may start then. We must consider the costs, challenge the Navy's numbers if we don't believe they're right, and lobby our political leaders to allocate funds, not just to clean-up Hangar One, but to prepare for its reuse.

This is a very good first step. I'm a little surprised that the Navy shifted gears so quickly. Kudos to all that have been involved. You are right, SBW, the heavy lifting may really start on 9/2.

Perhaps the Navy read my letters.
