As promised at the June 11 RAB meeting, the Navy has published its correspondence with the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation and California’s Office of Historic Preservation regarding Hangar One.
I haven’t had time to read these yet, but I wanted to make them available to the community as soon as possible.
The documents aren’t visible on [...]

Please attend the Mountain View City Council meeting tomorrow, June 30, to show your support for Hangar One. The council will consider staff recommendations that the city strongly oppose the Navy’s plan to strip the hangar to a skeleton with no plan to re-skin it.
I had some trouble downloading the staff report, so here’s [...]

Update: San Jose Mercury News: Herhold: Call in the bosses to save Hangar One
Congresswoman Anna Eshoo has long been on record opposing the destruction of Hangar One. On June 5, she reaffirmed that position in a letter (90KB PDF) to President Obama’s new Secretary of Navy Ray Mabus, former Mississippi Governor and Clinton-era Ambassador [...]

I was unable to attend the Restoration Advisory Board meeting last week, but around 100 Hangar One supporters turned out to hear the Navy forge ahead with its decision to turn the hangar into a skeleton without regard to historic preservation.
Thanks to community member Jim Van Pernis, we have a partial audio recording (6.1MB MP3) [...]

The EPA will allow the Navy to proceed with its plans to strip the skin from Hangar One and leave it a skeleton. Not surprising, really, but still a bit disappointing.
RAB Member Lenny Siegel forwarded EPA’s letter to Navy BRAC (109KB PDF) in which EPA concurs with the Navy’s decision and lays out EPA’s expectations [...]
May 6, 200908:46
The May RAB meeting has been postponed to June 11. We received this from Carolyn Hunter, the Navy’s contract community involvement manager:
On behalf of the Navy, the May 2009 RAB meeting has been postponed in order to provide substantive information for the RAB. The next scheduled RAB meeting is on July 9, 2009. However, the [...]
March 14, 200908:55
My position has always been the same: The Navy must pay to preserve Hangar One as part of the Base Realignment and Closure process. For years, Navy has denied that obligation and insisted it can only tear down the hangar or strip its skin and leave a deteriorating skeleton.
Now, at long last, the Navy [...]
